Any plant that has a trunk, and branches that can be pruned, can be used to create a bonsai. Many bonsai in Calgary are tropical plants that do well indoors all year, such as azalea, ficus, bougainvillea, fuchsia, etc. Others are shrubs and deciduos trees, such as elm, birch, apple, ginkgo, spirea, etc. they lose their leaves in the winter when the days are short. They need to be fresh but above freezing in the winter, but they don't need light when they don't have leaves. They can stay in a cold room in a basement, or a very fresh window, and do well. The most difficult here are the Evergreens (juniper, fir, pine, etc.) because they need a very cool place but above the freezing, the greatest humidity possible (not easy - it freezes on the windows to make the air dry) and a short duration of the day. A hole through the outdoor wall in a cold room, a fan to bring cold air, and fluorescent lights in a timer to imitate the short day outdoors, is a response, or a heated greenhouse just above the freeze, but are not common or easy. The Evergreens are not the best plant for a beginner. Potatoes are usually shallow and the length is about the height of the plant. Usually, a plant is located on a third outside of the pot, and a branch of extension grows on the two thirds not planted. The bonsai cascades and semi-waterfalls are planted in deep and narrow pots so that the descending branches are above the base. Color is personal taste, but usually the neutral colors of flat color are used forever, and the planes or bright can be used for deciduos trees. The brightest colors are sometimes used for flowering plants. Make sure the pot is no more obvious than the plant. The tools can be specific to bonsai, and there are many available. This is not necessary for a beginner. The foundations to start include a pair of fine pruners with pointed tips, a pair of toenail clips to cut small branches cleanly, a couple of wire cutters, small pliers to rotate wire, and possibly larger cantaloupes if larger trees are used. Fiber detection is very useful to cover drainage holes to prevent the soil from falling and still allow the water to escape. The soil used is suitable for the plant, so azalea needs high soils in plant fiber - it comes from a tropical jungle where what falls from a plant becomes the soil in which they grow. A desert plant would need soil with very fine sand or bark, which is suitable for its normal growth conditions. Avoid pottery mixtures that are mostly light, moss of peat. One that I like, called 'Pamper Your Plant', contains the earthworm castings and has more body than most, and also some nutrients. We use very little fertilizer, as we don't want it to grow very quickly. Water when your finger on the floor indicates you need it, don't leave water sitting on the saucer, and make sure there's a drain hole in the pot. Where can these plants grow in your house? Many tropical plants are grown in windows and adapted to different levels of light as our typical plants do. Those who need a lot of sunshine (citrus, hibisco, etc.) do not flourish much in the winter, but survive and welcome longer days and more intense light. Many, like weepy figs, require bright light and no hot sun, so they are relatively happy inside. Fluorescent lights are a great way to give tropical bonsai a happy place to live all winter. If the lights are in 12 to 14 hours a day, and it's hot, they have 'summer'! The lights must be very close to the plant - approximately four to six inches. A warm white and a cool white light bulb create a good light spectrum. A timer helps if they are not in an area where they are easily activated and turned off. Once the deciduos and always green bonsai are brought from cooler winter homes to our living areas, they can be kept in a sunny window until the temperatures are constantly above the outdoor freeze and gradually introduced to live where they prefer to be. No, however, put them directly in the hot sun - they are fried! Put them in a dark zone during the day, and move them at night until nighttime temperatures are well above the freeze, gradually move them to a little early sun in the morning, then to the light requirements that each plant needs. Pruning is made to create an image of an old tree and keep the plant the size we want it to be. Azalea is an excellent tropical plant to start, as it is needed to prune well. Typically, it is purchased in a pot around 6-8 "through, and 6" deep, and can be rooted to fit into a bonsai pot about 6" by 4" and 2" deep. The upper part and the roots must be in balance, so if it moves away from half the branches and leaves, you can remove half the roots. The flowers are too big in proportion to the "old" tree we are trying to create, so they are eliminated. Ancient trees do not have leaves or needles near the trunk - they are the oldest, and die as the new growth develops at the ends of the branches. So, the lower and inner small branches are eliminated. A 'front' of potential bonsai is chosen, and branches that cross or are too close are removed. Each branch should have its own place to be, and no branch should grow directly to the viewer. You're trying to create a look of an old miniature tree. Go outdoors and look at old trees and see their shape. The Bonsai usually do not move to larger pots as they grow, but their roots are periodically pruned, to allow the plant to remain in the same pot of size. The larger and larger roots are removed to allow space for the thin roots of the hair that absorb the water. Large roots seen on the surface, however, give the bonsai an age appearance. They can't spread far in the pot. The wire is used to hold a bonsai in the pot, extending through the drainage hole, through the root or around the trunk, and down through the hole again, wounding together or extending under the pot. It is also used to form branches, spiraling up or out along a branch so that when the branch is folded to create a particular pattern that holds that position. It should be checked regularly to prevent it from cutting on the bark while the tree grows. Bonsai styles are traditional and come from the Japanese. They include formal vertical, informal vertical, windswept, cascade and forest, and several others that are less used. There are specific rules for each one, which have a purpose, but this is an art, not a scientific experiment, and the most important rule of all is that you should be pleased. Remember that a bonsai represents an old miniature tree. If he reminds you of a tree you've seen, or of an image you remember, then it's worthwhile for you.
